Age group(s) for which this strategy is helpful:
Elementary School
Middle School
High School & Beyond

Instructions for using this strategy:
Each night when I come home, I empty my pockets and sit with my son and count the change. If he gets it right, he can keep it, otherwise, it goes into my money jar.

Other information parents should consider:
Make it like a game. Start simple. Mix up the change, have your child put like coins together. Progress to identifying the coin. Then its value. Then have them put the piles of coins in the order of value. Always count the largest first. As your child progresses, then add on a more the difficult task. After a while, you will see you child naturally putting the coins in piles and value order the moment you lay the coins in front of them. Other money tasks I play with him are getting all the coins he's earned and then counting them together; exchanging the coins for currency; taking him to the store to buy a new game or toy.
