Description of technique:
The sad fact is that we hear all too often in the news about teenage drunk-driving accidents or a teen that has lost his life to drugs.
As parents, we have an incredibly tough job to convince our children that drugs and/or alcohol are just not an option. Here are a few suggestions:
1. Set a good example because your kids are watching you. "Do as I say but not as I do" is not going to fly with your teen.
2. Teach them about making responsible choices and start early (around 9 years of age). Actions have consequences at any age.
3. Teach your children about true friendship. When peer pressure hits, they'll be able to stand up better to their friends. Get to know your child's friend's parents.
4. Don't be naive. Watch for the signs that your teen is in trouble: failing grades, changes in behavior (too much sleep, too little sleep, eating too much, eating too little), changes in friendships etc.
